Can the sight glass be replaced from outside of the transmission, or only from inside the transmission housing...

Most sight glass gauges thread in to the casing from the outside and seal against the casing with an o-ring underneath the shoulder of the fitting. If it is not cracked, you maybe able to reseal it with some silicone or a new o-ring. That will require removing it so you may get REAL luck and be able to park your tractor on a slope steep enough to allow removing the sight glass gauge without draining your oil down below the gauge. If you not you can use a marine type oil changer that sucks the oil out of the dip stick or add hole. ....

Good to hear that this sounds like a fairly easy fix. Clever idea looking for a steep slope. The reverse of the idea is that levels should be checked when the tractor is level. Guess it's obvious that the hill should be OK for safe operation. If getting oil to the front or back of the cases doesn't do it, then parking at an angle across a hill so oil also goes side to side might help.
Without a fancy pump for lowering the level I might try draining some from the drain plug and then putting the plug back in. That's what I do when changing oil because I don't have a large enough drain that fits under the tractor. It's not too messy and I found that screwing the fill cap back in slows the flow. For doing it this way I'd take a lot of care with cleanliness if the oil is going back in the tractor. ....
